Who are the British Orienteering Federation?
The British Orienteering Federation is the governing body of the sport of orienteering in the United Kingdom – an exciting outdoor adventure sport which involves walking or running whilst navigating around a course using detailed map and sometimes a compass.
The aim of orienteering is to navigate your way through a series of control points and decide the best route to complete your way through the course in the quickest time. You can be any age and any level of fitness so participation for orienteering is widely accepted.
It’s a sport which can take place almost anywhere from secluded forests and countryside to urban locations such as urban parks or even in schools and encourages teamwork and communication. The varied pace at which you do orienteering means that it’s great for joggers and walkers alike who want to improve their overall fitness as well as navigational skills and if you love the outdoors then it’s something that is well worth a try.
Where can you get involved?
One of the best ways for you to get involved in orienteering is to get in touch with your local club. You can find your nearest orienteering club on the British Orienteering Federation website, or by taking a peek on the listings at do it crowd. Many clubs provide regular training and activities in a non-competitive environment that helps to develop skills with an emphasis on motivation and socialisation for people of all types of ages and abilities.
